SCHERERVILLE – Chef Joseph Trama, executive chef at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts in Munster has been named 2010 Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation (ACF) Chefs of Northwest Indiana. The honor was presented at the ACF Chefs of Northwest Indiana annual appreciation dinner and reception Monday, Jan. 17 at the Halls of St. George in Schererville. Chef Trama accepted the award, medallion, gift certificate and white jacket from ACF president of NW Indiana Cheryl Molenda.
“I thank the chef members that I have been privileged to be around for more than 30 years in the ACF,” Trama said. I’d also like to thank Chef Elida Abetya from Ivy Tech Community College (East Chicago) for allowing me to mentor the culinary students in my role as part of their adjunct faculty.”
Besides sharing his knowledge by serving as adjunct professor of Culinary Arts at Ivy Tech Community College, Trama is known around the region for many other accomplishments in the world of fine cuisine. He has been a participant in the annual Celebrity Chefs fund raiser for Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana. Readers of both the Times and Post-Tribune have repeatedly voted the Center for Visual & Performing Art’s Sunday Brunch #1 in their annual poll.
In 2002, he hosted the American Culinary Federation’s Chicago Chefs of Cuisine event. He earned bronze medals in the Sandcreek Country Club Ice Centerpiece contest and the McCormick Place Poultry category. And, in 2004, he was among only four finalists (out of 41) in the Pasta Labella Recipe Challenge to prepare his recipe during the ACF annual national convention in Orlando, Fla.
In addition to naming the top chef, other awards presented at the ACF Chefs of NW Indiana annual dinner include purveyor of the year; ACF service awards, and scholarships. Dana Wichlinski (Munster) took top honors as “Student of the Year” with Robert Crist (Griffith) and Kyle Fouch (Valparaiso) as Runners Up.
Chef Trama is also nominated for Chef Educator of the Year by the ACF of NW Indiana which is to be determined at the Central Regional conference in New Orleans, April 17-20.
